The story of MIM began with a visionary idea to create a truly global musical instrument museum. Bob Ulrich, the museum's founder, was inspired to develop a museum that would showcase instruments played daily by people worldwide, rather than focusing solely on historic Western classical instruments. The goal from the very beginning was to deliver a musical experience that is enriching, inspiring, interesting, and fun for everyone.

At MIM, you'll encounter over 7,500 musical instruments and objects from over 200 countries and territories, each with its own story to tell. The museum’s Geographic Galleries are a testament to the universal language of music, showcasing the rich tapestry of global cultures through multimedia displays.

The Geographic Galleries focus on major world regions: Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, Latin America, Europe, and United States / Canada. Many of the instruments displayed are rare examples, some of the finest of their kind, historically significant, or part of distinctive musical cultures. As guests absorb the stunning collection, video monitors with footage of musical performances show instruments played in their original contexts.

For those fascinated by the icons of music, the Artist Gallery provides an intimate look at instruments and memorabilia from some of the most influential artists in history. Imagine standing face-to-face with the instruments once played by legends such as Elvis Presley®, Tito Puente, the Carter Family and Johnny Cash, Roberta Flack, Glen Campbell, Joan Baez, Maroon 5, and many others.
